  Dir. Simon Moutairou – The first film in a year-long Écrans Francophones series. Mauritius, 1759. On the island's French-run sugar plantations, the enslaved live in constant fear. Sixteen-year-old Mati refuses to accept her fate. One night she flees toward a rumored community of runaways deep in the interior. Her escape triggers a ruthless manhunt: the plantation owner hires a merciless slave catcher and her sons to track her down. Knowing what capture would mean, her father, Massamba, breaks his chains and follows her into the jungle — a desperate fight for survival, and a final break from the colonial system. Presented by the French and Francophone Studies Program, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Albertine Cinémathèque.
